This annual gridiron extravaganza is eagerly anticipated throughout the year and is considered one of the biggest and most highly-watched events of the college football season. Known as the Red River Rivalry or Red River Shootout, the inaugural matchup took place in 1900 and 2005 saw the 100th meeting between the schools. The name is derived from the Red River which forms part of the boundary between Texas and Oklahoma.

This meeting has been held at the Cotton Bowl football stadium in Dallas since 1912 and was chosen as a neutral meeting place between the schools, located equidistant from both Norman, Oklahoma and Austin, Texas. Since 1929, this game has taken place during the first weekend of October during the State Fair of Texas.
